Preparing for Preseason: An Athlete’s Quick Guide

Why Preseason Preparation Matters

Preseason is your chance to lay the groundwork for a successful season. Whether you’re a high school athlete, in college, or competing at the next level, how you prepare before the first practice directly impacts your performance, confidence, and consistency.

Step 1: Build Your Timeline & Training Plan

“Failing to plan is planning to fail.”

Start by writing out your personal preseason timeline.

  • Ideal planning window:

    • 8–10 weeks out is optimal

    • 6 weeks can work at lower levels

    • 12+ weeks may be needed for high-level or elite training goals

Ask Yourself:

  • What do I need to improve to be ready?

    • Conditioning?

    • Strength training?

    • Sport-specific skills?

    • More game play?

    • Recovery and nutrition?

  • What will it take to get there?

  • Who can I talk to (coach, trainer, expert) to make sure I’m on track?

Step 2: Use Visualization to Guide Your Goals

Close your eyes and imagine:

  • What do you look like on day one of preseason?

  • Are you in top shape?

  • Are your technical skills sharp?

  • Do you feel confident and ready?

Use this image as your target. Revisit it often to fuel your training sessions with purpose.

Step 3: Organize Your Week with Intention

Be specific. Write down your weekly and daily goals. 

  • Does today’s goal align with your weekly goal?

  • Does your weekly goal support your full training plan?

  • Are you waking up each day with a clear purpose

Step 4: Define Your Preseason Mentality

Your mindset drives your motivation. So ask yourself:

  • What motivates me?

    • Internal drive to improve?

    • External goals like starting, winning, or making a team?

  • What’s my WHY?

    • Why do I want this season to be great?

    • What am I willing to give up to make it happen?

  • How will I handle competition?

    • What if everyone else is working just as hard?

    • How will I stay focused and confident?

Step 5: Create SMART, Growth-Focused Goals

Your goals should be:

  • Specific – Know exactly what you’re working toward

  • Measurable – Track progress

  • Achievable – Push yourself, but don’t set yourself up for failure

  • Relevant – Support your season performance

  • Time-bound – Know your deadline (preseason start)

Step 6: Reflect Daily & Adjust as Needed

Each day is a new chance to take a step forward. At the end of the day:

  • Did you accomplish your goal?

  • What helped or got in the way?

  • What will you do differently tomorrow?

Step 7: Track Your Progress & Stay Accountable

Success doesn’t happen by chance—it happens by staying on track.

Here are a few ways to hold yourself accountable:

  • Work with a mental performance coach

  • Use a daily journal or goal tracker

  • Set up a whiteboard in your room

  • Share your goals with a trusted teammate or friend

  • Use off days for rest and reflection

Final Thought: If the Season Matters, So Should Preseason

No elite athlete just shows up ready. They prepare. They sacrifice. They commit.

So if your goals matter, make your preseason training matter. Be organized, motivated, consistent—and don’t be afraid to ask for help or support along the way.
